The Jesus model of leadership

The Jesus model of leadership

This Parchment post is a summary of my sermon note from a message preached by Pastor Sam Adeyemi at Daystar Christian Centre on Sunday, February 26, 2017

Looking at Psalm 78:70-72, I am inspired because David progressed from managing sheep to managing people. He went from being a shepherd boy to leading a whole nation. That’s stewardship. He did so well in managing sheep that God said, “I want you to run the whole nation.”

He also chose David His servant, and took him from the sheepfolds; from following the ewes that had young He brought him to shepherd Jacob His people and Israel His inheritance. So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands. Psalm 78:70-72

Jesus said if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to you the true riches? The most important resource God has placed on earth is people.

God is jealous about the management of human beings and the management of human beings is leadership. Families, countries and organisations rise or fall based on how they treat their people. Look around the world; you’ll find that the poorest countries are the ones that don’t treat their people well.

The most important thing to God on earth is how you treat people. As a husband, God is concerned about how you treat your wife (1Peter 3:7). Jesus says the greatest commandment in the law is to “love God with all your heart and might, and to love your neighbour as yourself.”

Without capacity to love, your failure is guaranteed. You will make mistakes. -@Sam_Adeyemi Click To Tweet

Dear employer you cannot own your employees. Being an employee is not the same as slavery; it’s just a contract. You cannot own a human being. A human life is too sacred to be owned.

Jesus says, “I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” Notice that Jesus calls the church “My church”. It’s His church, not mine. My pastor told me, “Whoever takes ownership of the church is the one that confronts the gates of hell.” I find it difficult to call church members my members. They are His members, I am only an undershepherd.

Leadership is very important to God. It’s important to God what we do with people’s lives. And leadership is not about position, it is ability to influence. God is holding you responsible for what you do with people.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. John 10:11-13

God wants you to love people. Every other thing will flow from there. (John 3:16, 1John 3:16). Without capacity to love, your failure is guaranteed. You will make mistakes. And you can’t fake it – people know whether you love them or not.

The most important thing you can do for people is sacrifice. You cannot be selfish and succeed as a leader. The good shepherd thinks sacrifice. When you have a structure of leadership where the people in leadership consume most of the resources it is devilish and needs to be changed.

David confronted a lion because of one lamb. He could have escaped for his life and would have even been commended for being that smart but not David! He had set a higher standard for himself that anything committed to his care would only increase and never decrease.

God saw David’s leadership and disrupted the monarchical system to get him in. This message is a prophecy. I’m describing somebody’s story here. There is disruption now. Don’t focus on what is not happening. God is starting something.

A good leader thinks sacrifice. You can't be selfish and succeed as a leader. -@Sam_Adeyemi Click To Tweet

I declare today that the occupation of some positions have expired. The positions of occultic, selfish people have expired.

God pulled David out of obscurity. From the day the anointing came upon him, he came out of obscurity. It is God that appoints and removes kings. God took the rulership from Saul and gave it to David. The Industrial Revolution happened because of transformation that started inside the church. It is called the Reformation.

When you’re anointed God creates opportunities but they don’t look like opportunities; they are problems. Goliath appeared on the scene. He was a national problem. David had a different perspective. I’ll take him out, he said. David did not kill Goliath for nothing. He was rewarded.

This country’s problems have become your own opportunity. Not only will you be promoted, you will handle resources that you did not handle before.
